Beyond words: Live the authentic “Italian way of life”
Potomac Italian Academy: we offer an innovative teaching method for American Italophile students, where language and grammar are learned directly through supporting topics and dialogue. We do not teach grammar through boring exercises, but use it as a vehicle to explore high-value content. Linguistically, we operate under the Content-Based Instruction (CBI) paradigm, because we consider it a modern, immersive, and engaging method. Our curriculum is divided into specialized macro-areas that bring together the best of our tradition and our future.

“A heads-up: The courses are conducted entirely in Italian, the native language. While primarily aimed at intermediate (or intermediate-advanced) level students – as some foundational knowledge of the language is helpful – they are still highly suitable for beginners, who will simply need to put in a little extra effort. The use of English is discouraged as much as possible. However, some specific terms and expressions typical of the native language will be maintained and used.”-“Furthermore, please be advised that the courses will initially be held online.
What will one learn in these courses and/or paths?
You’ll gradually and fluently enhance your dialogue and independent conversation skills. Reading will be a driving factor in this. Additionally, you’ll familiarize yourself, as much as possible, with the cornerstones of Italian culture, customs, and products, without overlooking the ever-growing interest in technical and technological innovations among Italians. Finally, we’ll cover Italy’s stance and perspective on international topics, free from preconceptions (thus, remaining impartial).
Concise Introductory Report: “Potomac Italian Academy”
These courses or paths/tracks provide students—here meaning American or Italian-American—a deep understanding of Italian knowledge and culture, language, and traditions through an integrated approach that combines theory, practice, reading, and cultural immersion. The material is provided in PowerPoint (.pptx) format.
Contents of the Courses or Paths/Pathways/Tracks
Courses (18h): The course and its materials are used during the course itself, both online and on the computer, to meet the needs and target of the students. They act as aggregators on a specific topic, even in the absence of a fully comprehensive course.
Paths/Pathways (18h × n): These constitute a sequence made up of multiple courses (n) designed to build knowledge of a topic in a structured and, in the basic components, comprehensive way, despite obvious simplifications. Each course within the path is independently monitored, tested, and assessed through learning and/or grammar exercises, serving as intermediate evaluations (milestone tests) and a final evaluation (capstone test). Each path typically consists of at least three (3) and up to five (5 or more) courses.
